The purpose of this document is to serve as a handbook for those countries which still lack an institutional machinery to promote gender equality or are in the process of reviewing and improving the existing machinery. Its main aims are to provide a number of guidelines for establishing, implementing and making use of a national machinery to promote equality as well as to propose some examples of “good practice”, which could be followed. The Nordic countries are referred to more often than othe r countries. This is mainly due to their long-standing experience with national equality machineries. However, some examples from Southern and Eastern Europe have also been included.en_US
